I shared this recipe on Eighteen25 last week and wanted to share it here too...
A trifle has been one of my favorite things to have at a party or bring to a potluck for the last couple years. I have taken the same basic recipe and just created new combinations of fruit and cake. Two of my favorites are a strawberry shortcake made with butter recipe yellow cake and a brownie raspberry.
I know these are not the most artistically prepared desserts, since I usually heap together the ingredients in just a few minutes. Using a pastry bag for the coolwhip mixture would probably go a long way when trying to make a trifle all neat and pretty.
I simply bake up a box of cake mix, pan of brownies or get a pre-made cake like angel food from my grocery store bakery. All you have to do is tear the cake/brownies into small chunks. Next step is to mix together a cream cheese coolwhip concoction, and have lots of fresh fruit that I toss in just a little sugar.
The trifle can be made in advance and stored in the fridge. It really holds up well as it sits out during a party. I also have packaged up individual trifles in little mason jars.
Another combination I really want to try is peaches with yellow cake...or some apples sauteed in a little butter and brown sugar with spice cake as a fall themed dessert. Love that there are so many mix and match possibilities!
