Meriwhether was born in July 1998. Two engaged college kids and their toddler brought her home to live with them that October. Because that's what you do when you live in university housing where they don't allow pets...you get a dog.
Honestly, Meri was not the friendliest dog. We spent a lot of time over the years explaining to people that even though she was growling when you went to scratch her neck, that she actually really wanted you to keep petting her. She would bury her head in your lap happy as can be...still growling the entire time.
She was the leader of the canine trifecta...the much older sister to two little brothers that she could have cared less about. I joked that she thought she was Sean's wife and she couldn't stand me. But she and I shared a special bond over a piece of steak here and there and always the ends of hotdogs, since for some reason I don't really like them...Mers was always ready to help me out when I was being picky.
Her signature move was shaking her head so that her ears flapped around. She did that one last time yesterday as she got in the car with us to go to the vet. Her health had declined drastically these last couple of months and it took us a couple extra weeks to come to grips with the fact that it was time to live, for the first time in almost fifteen years, without Meri around.
Oh Mers, we are going to miss you.
