Just Make Stuff

The May finale...

Sean and I are usually more than happy to stay at home, but every once in awhile I get an idea of where we need to go (for instance the picnic a couple of weeks ago).

When I heard that Love, Loss ad What I Wore was playing in Los Angeles I knew it was time to get out of the house.  It ended up being my perfect graduation celebration with Sean. We split a quick lunch before the play's matinée on Sunday afternoon. The play was beyond wonderful...hysterical and poignant and astoundingly engaging considering it was simply monologues. And I sat mesmerized by the fact that I was mere yards from Rita Wilson up on stage.  

Afterward we went to one of my favorite restaurants, Lawry's. Any place that's defining feature is a rolling cart of beef is a piece heaven to me. At one point during the dinner I may or may not have tears of joy in my eyes.

It was pretty much a dream day...a fantastic end to what has been an amazing month.

Almost exactly ten years ago today...

So I went back to a year 2000 calendar and saw that the date was actually May 26th, but that year the 26th was the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. Therefore I am counting today, the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, as the anniversary.

Ten years ago today Sean and I had signed some papers and went to have dinner with my mom...chicken strips for me because I am a major chick strip aficionado. For instance what did I have to eat right before my wedding? Chicken strips. What was my lunch that delayed the semi-emergency c-section with Mac? Actually Taco Bell, but I probably wanted chicken strips. 

I digress, it's just that chicken strips are really good.

So while eating I get a phone call...and when I answered it I found out they accepted our offer...we were officially in escrow for a house.

To say I was excited was probably the understatement of the century. I won't bore you with all the details, but suffice it to say my father's pre-nuptial agreement resulted in us getting to shop for a house at the young age of 24 and 22 years old (this time of year I have to endure having a husband that is two years younger until the end of August).

We found this house at the end of a day of searching and not really finding anything. On our way back to our apartment we saw one last "Open House" sign and decided to stop. 

We walked in the door just starting to look at the downstairs and stopped to meet the realtor. She explained that the home was owned by two teachers that were retiring to move Oregon. Two teachers and Oregon...Sean and my eyes met as that was said and somehow we just knew this was our home.

 

We hadn't even seen anything else, not even the upstairs and yet we knew. As we wandered around I called my mom to come check it out (after all as Sean has measured she lives only seven tenths of a mile away). I watched my mom walk into this house and saw her face change too. 

This was our home...the place we would live forever...or at least until we are two teachers that retire and maybe move to Oregon. Six weeks later when the keys were in my hand for the first time I drove over here, sat in the driveway and cried I was so happy. 

We have thrown so many parties...decorated for ten Christmases...worked in the yard...and Sean has patiently applied 36 different colors of paint. Yes, you read that correctly, thirty-six. 

Since that phone call ten years ago told us that this place was ours, every single moment of getting to be here has been an immense blessing.

We love this home.

I did (almost) everything...

If you know Sean & Nora you probably know that Sean is the baker in the family. He grew up with a mom who makes wedding cakes as a hobby so I consider his baking prowess to be hereditary. It might also have something to do with his aptitude for activities that require patience and precision...unlike his ironically perfectionist, but thoroughly inexact wife.

So when I set out to bake yesterday it was fairly momentous...heck I even separated an egg. If you've seen the disaster that is me trying to simply crack an egg you'd know what an immense accomplishment the separation task was. 

I have to admit I utilized Sean's help to figure out the rolling (thankfully we had this) but everything else I did...oh no wait, I totally lied he measured out the flour while I manned the Kitchen Aid...I wouldn't want him reading this and seeing that I didn't give him full credit. 

Today I packaged up some to send to work with Sean (to share during the 15 meetings he had scheduled). I also made a little thank you bag for my mom because the recipe came from one of the pile of cookbooks she recently gave me.

It's just the beginning of a summer of cooking...who knows what's next.

Actually I do know, I volunteered to make BBQ chicken for a neighborhood get-together this weekend so next is figuring out how to make a good homemade BBQ sauce...I have a pile of recipes ready so I can pull from them to concoct something myself...happy to make something with a little of this and a lot of that after my foray into have-to-measure-carefully baking.

Lemon Sugar Cookies with Zesty Lime Salt

This recipe from the Salty Sweets cookbook my mom recently gave me for my birthday. These were such good little bites...sweet and citrus-y, and buttery too which is always important in a cookie.

Lemon Sugar Cookies with Zesty Lime Salt

Makes about 30 cookies

Ingredients:

2 coups all-purpose flour

¾ teaspoon fine sea salt

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

1 cup sugar

1 large egg yolk

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1 teaspoon lemon zest

Zest of 1 lime

Instructions:

1. Combine the flour and ½ teaspoon of the salt in a medium bowl and mix well.

2. In a bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment cream the butter for 1 minute, then add ¾ cup of the sugar and beat on medium-high speed for 3 minutes, until mixture is light and fluffy.

3. Add the egg yolk, lemon juice and lemon zest and beat for 2 more minutes. Slowly add the flour mixture and mix on low speed until the dough comes together.

4. Combine the lime zest, the remaining ¼ cup of sugar and the remaining ¼ teaspoon of sea salt in a shallow dish or on a plate (for rolling).

5. Roll the dough into logs 1½ to 2 inches in diameter, then roll the logs into the lime zest mixture. Wrap the logs in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour.

6. Preheat the oven to 350’F. Line baking sheets with parchment.

7. Slice the chilled logs into ¼ inch-thick circles and place on baking sheets. Bake for 9-11 minutes, or until just lightly browned on the bottom. Let cool on the baking sheets for about 1 minute, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. The cookies will keep in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Well Wishes...

It's probably because I am on vacation, but I am craving all things summer (except the heat). 

Here's a super simple card to help celebrate...I guess I could have done more to it, but I didn't want to cover up the white woodgrain cardstock. 

I thought it might work with a end of the year teacher gift or in my case it will go to Mac with some little "happy summer" gifts.

Ten on Tuesday...

1. Day one of summer vacation was kind of ruined by a headache...here's hoping for a better day two.

2. Sean saved the day and cooked up some of these for dinner which were really good.

3. But we used panko bread crumbs which are my new favorite thing since I love all things crispy.

4. Before the annoying headache I finished updating the various things I've made in the last six months

6. Have I ever shared that I really struggle with right and left? For instance I had to take a moment to be sure that the link was actually on the left hand side of the blog. I have to use that left hand L-shape trick way too often.

7. As for more making things I'm putting together one of these as a birthday gift for a friend who has a new baby. I made one for my dad's birthday last fall.

8. I am also making egg salad sandwiches to take out to her tomorrow since we both love tea sandwiches.

9. Speaking of cooking the first summer recipe I'm trying will be from this book...sugar cookies with zesty lime salt.

10. And since I haven't made anything yet here's the last bit of craftiness from my Girl's Loft guest design...

 

I forgot to mention last week that this kit was so chock-full of stuff that I have an envelope leftover to share...please leave a "Pick me" if you'd like it...

Okay please humor me with one last graduation post...just sharing a little bit of yesterday.

My plan for the last couple of years was to not walk for my bachelor's degree, but all the Women's Studies classes changed my mind. There was the wonderful faculty, the enthusiastic fellow students and the e-mails asking for photos and a song to play while you received your diploma.

Anything that involves photos and music together sounds like a good time to me. 

This meant a good hour long conversation with my mom to choose a song to pair with the few photos I was asked to provide. Considering both Mom and I would be hard pressed to choose just a hundred of our favorite songs it took awhile to come up with the one that felt just right for the day...

It was a perfect little celebration...my very favorite part was getting Mac into the cap and gown just like we did eleven years ago...except this time he was able to joke that now that he's graduated from college he doesn't need to go to school this week.

And that officially completes all (or at least most) school discussions until late August. Thank you again for all of the congratulatory wishes...every single comment has meant so much to me.

Now it is time for summer vacation...and cooking...and reading...and sitting on the beach every once in awhile...and of course all kinds of crafting.

This morning...

It's my turn.

Eleven years ago I stood by as Sean graduated. 

I should have too, but we all know that story.

He took Mac with him up on stage for me...symbolic of our new little family since we were getting married in just a couple of months. He took Mac because if I had been graduating I would have taken Mac...just like my mom took me all those years ago when she graduated with her master's degree.

Today, I am taking Mac.

My super cool teenager agreed to walk up on stage with his old mom...and it means the world to me that he did. 

Next time you read this blog, a college graduate will be writing it.

Just got the best e-mail ever...

I'm posting from my phone since we're home from getting Mac new shoes (always an undertaking since he has to wear two different sizes due to his brace) and then had a late dinner.

I have to admit I have been compulsively checking my school e-mail account waiting to hear if my grad school application will be reviewed.

I just saw an e-mail from the professor I have been working with and here's what it said...

"You have been accepted into the Sociology Department MA program"

I am pretty much spinning with relief and immense happiness and wanted to share my good news with everyone because of how much I appreciated all your support when it was bad news...so thank you, thank you, thank you.

Well it was a good idea...

It was all planned and we were out the door in less than forty-five minutes.

Somehow flipping through a magazine and seeing prosciutto piled on top of a baguette had me thinking that Sean and I should go on a picnic for dinner.

I managed to quickly spend $24 on bread, meats and cheese at the grocery store. Sean packed up our old wagon with our picnic table, cooler and blanket. This might be a good time to explain that our picnic blanket is a light blue satin comforter with dark blue embroidered roses...a wedding gift from one of Sean's great-aunt's. I have to admit it never quite made it onto our bed, but it's our park and beach blanket with lots of sentimental value. 

 

Sean and I walked to a park about a mile and half away and we sat under the shade of the trees eating and talking while my little iPod player had music going for us. This picnic was a good idea.

Then we began to notice the various gaggles of young teens scattered about. Then we saw a fight break out complete with people egging it on and taping it on cell phones. By the time two guys walked by us with an obvious bag of alcohol and handed it over to kids who couldn't have been more than fifteen Sean and I started to pack up and head out.

The picnic was a good idea, just not for Mr. Griffin the junior high teacher and Mac's mom who easily loses sleep thinking about the pitfalls of the teenage years.

But you should really try a little prosciutto with some pear and brie on a piece of baguette. That's always a good idea.

Well Wishes...

It's my brother-in-law's birthday this week so we needed a card to go along with his gift. I used some new Basics paper for the background, layered some patterns and added a birthday tag.

Ten on Tuesday...

1. Tomorrow I take two finals and that's it...I am a college student for five more days...and then who knows.

2. One of the possibilities still remains being a grad student. I have been extremely fortunate to have had a professor ask to have my application reviewed again and put her endorsement in saying she'd be happy to work with me since my research interests align with hers. I've been waiting to hear from the department.

3. Last week as Sean and I were exchanging text messages I likened this waiting to the Darby debacle...we had to wait then too...all the while we knew in our hearts that it wasn't going to work out, but we had just enough hope to kind of torture us. Granted this is a much less severe situation, but it feels uncannily similar to wait it out.

4. Okay happy thoughts and happy opportunities...I got to guest design this month for The Girls Loft (it's what I alluded to the other night)...I made four layouts and a set of four cards over the last few days...here's a couple of the layouts...

6. Because school is almost done I am making the grandiose plans of everything I want to do with my newfound freedom...like cook a recipe every day from my stack of new cookbooks, update things around the blog, and more Etsy stuff.

7. One of the other things I want to do is organize the digital kits I've collected over the last year...does anyone have any good tips on the best way to do this...is there a good program to use maybe?

8. Speaking of organizing...I have put the s'more basket to good use lately.

10. Okay I have to get going since I have a "date" to watch last week's Friday Night Lights with Sean...every time they say "Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose" I'm usually in tears.

A little catch up...

It does not feel like the usual Sunday night...somehow this whole weekend has been so relaxing. Like catch up on tv shows, don't care if my pajama shirt is on inside out (or that I was in pajamas all day), and eating popcorn for dinner kind of relaxing. 

Some stuff still got done though...like studying for the two finals I have Tuesday, finding a shirt & cardigan for graduation next weekend, and catching up on a few little projects around the house.

One of those things was trying to take photos of the branch decoration I made a couple of weeks ago for my make-n-take table. Of course today was my favorite kind of day, cool and cloudy, which is not so good for the picture taking...

 

 

See, I told you bad photos.

Oh well moving on...it's going to be a good & busy week around our house...but somehow I want to make time to try this, play with this, and work on the blog garage sale idea I mentioned almost two months ago now.

Should have...

Today was another case of what I should have done versus what I did do. I should have worked on the four essays I need to write and study for my Juvenile Delinquency final.

I did scrapbook...but I can't share it quite yet.

Please tell me I'm not the only who misbehaved today...or were you responsible with the "should have's"?
 

Well Wishes...

I really don't think there is anything better than combining patterns although I probably did too much of it on this bright birthday card, but I'm happy to have it tucked away waiting for the next birthday wish I need to send. 

Ten on Tuesday...

1. I had the laziest Monday ever.

4. Tomorrow starts my very last week as an undergraduate student...just four more classes to go this week and two finals to take next Tuesday.

5. This is not good considering I have lost pretty much all motivation...as evidenced by my level of productivity today.

6. I just made dinner for tomorrow night right now at 9:30pm...between classes for me, tutoring and karate for Mac, and coaching a track meet for Sean there will only be enough time to reheat and devour tomorrow night.

7. I have to admit I have been planning a bit of a craft room rearrange...that noise you just heard was my mom groaning (she thinks I rearrange too much), but she's the one who gave me a cool old file cabinet so it's her fault.

8. I'm guessing my mom is not the only one who thinks I rearrange too much so I will not mention the couple ideas I want to do in our living room.

Sunday scramble...

Running out of time again as we always seem to do on Sunday nights. 

It was a pretty productive weekend though...here are the highlights...

Mac got home on Friday afternoon and changed from his school uniform to something a little more comfortable...a plaid flannel shirt and striped tie.

I finished making and writing birthday thank you's.

Our new garage refrigerator was delivered in all of it's fridge-on-top freezer-on-the-bottom glory. It was our tax return purchase and replaces our 13 year old energy draining fridge. I'm probably way more excited than I need to be. 

Speaking of garages, we did my mom's big clean-out (instead of being selfish like I was last week) we discovered things like treasured Fisher Price toys and have every last thing organized now...but not before we ate dinner so Sean and I had a romantic setting with music and candles out in her garage since we still had items piled in the driveway. 

And my very favorite part of Mother's Day was the duct tape rose Mac made for me at school.

I love all your stamps! I am doing weight watchers online. So far I have lost a little over ten pounds. I am not a great cook, but ww has a great website with a ton of healthy recipes in every category you can possibly imagine!

Oh boy do I love me some Cats Life Press stamps!!!!!!

One of my favorite light snacks is super simple: carrot sticks dipped in hummus. It is yummy! I also like to make a little individual snack "pizza": half of a while grain English muffin, a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, a thin slice of tomato, a sprinkling of chopped fresh basil, and a sprinkling of low fat mozzarella cheese. Pop in a toaster oven. Fast and easy!

Sharing the wealth...

So I have stamps leftover from this year's make-n-take and actually last year's too. They're aren't brand new since each one has been stamped over fifty times but they are ready to go for plenty more.

I have six envelopes with three stamps each to send off...please leave a comment if you'd like some. 

And in keeping the "share the wealth" theme, I am making one more effort at losing weight and getting healthy especially with age 35 officially looming. I'm searching for good foods so if you have a favorite light recipe or snack idea to share I would really appreciate it.

Ten on Tuesday...

1. This an official I have no clue what to talk about Ten on Tuesday post.

2. Which, I don't know about you, but I much prefer to last week's Ten on Tuesday entry.

3. So dinner tonight was a chicken recipe my mom taught me. Boneless skinless chicken breasts, russian dressing, apricot preserves and a packet of dry onion soup mix...350 degrees for 45 minutes and serve with rice. Kind of like a sweet and sour chicken.

4. Too much red velvet cake has been consumed today...and honestly I don't feel that bad about it right now.

5. I am using this stamp and these tags for my birthday thank you note writing and that's all I know right now.

6. Except after going to the Paper Source website I now know I want this, this, this and really want this too.

7. I am such a rubber stamp addict.

8. I am also an idiot...over the weekend I discovered I had never mentioned my blog to my sister-in-law...after about three years of e-mailing each other just about every weekday...so hello to Stephanie if you're reading this. 

9. Oh and Steph, Sean managed to catch this yesterday as I was listening to Bella sing on the phone...

Craft supplies & cookbooks oh my...

I had a birthday today...a good one...one where I got spoiled with too much of my favorite things...like iTunes cards, scrap/stamp supplies, lots of lobster, and just a few cookbooks. My mother always goes above and beyond and this stack is no different...

 

It almost makes me okay with having to be 34 now...almost.

Of course you know 34 is not the big deal...the big deal comes 365 days from today...35.

But I have a few days to get ready for that, right?

NSD means...

Good morning! I just got up kind of late since I was having make-n-take fun and then went out to a late night snack.

So it's National Scrapbooking Day, but I am being super cheesy and saying that NSD stands for "Nora's Special Day" (told you it was dumb). I made the incredibly selfish decision to ask my mother if we could delay plans to clean out her garage so I could spend the day scrapbooking. After this kind of bad news week I really wanted a fun day. A day full of music, snacks and patterned paper. 

It's a good thing I have such a nice mom. 

Speaking of my nice mom...I have shared before on this day how she is responsible for getting me started on this hobby fourteen years ago tomorrow. Last year I shared my favorite layouts from over the years to celebrate the day. A couple of years ago I spent the day scrapbooking and updated the post with each layout and that is my plan today. 

Every time I get one finished I'll post it, but to make it more fun I will share a little extra of what I used to make the layout. Just leave a comment on the post and I will post winners on Monday morning. I'd love to know what you have going on for NSD...or if you're making layouts today also please share a link because I'd love to see them.

I punched extra photo corners, stamped two messy "For Your Information" title boxes and have a blue lined journaling box with a gray tree stamped in the corner waiting to be sent out to someone.

Okay change of plans on the cousin layout...that'll be next...took this photo this morning, printed it, and got it onto a silly layout...

 

 

 

I have an envelope with a bunch of polka dot daisies and green paper to make stems and leaves...and a strip of stamped deer...because every layout needs stamped deer, right?
